Happy Tuesday, friends. After a long, sleepy season of winter grays, the overlap of spring and Easter feels especially meaningful to me—a reminder of the preciousness of new life and fresh beginnings.

TC Scout Passport: The People Have Spoken

Speaking of hope and new things on the horizon…

Last week, readers voted on what they thought was a fair price for the TC Scout Passport. 55% voted for $20, 25% for $15, 9% for $25, and 11% for “other”. So $20 it is—thanks for weighing in!

A couple of you asked where the money goes—fair question. It covers the time and costs of keeping this newsletter running and making the Passport happen, like partnering with local restaurants and creating something meaningful for our community. These partnerships give restaurants a boost and help you discover new favorites.

This newsletter will always be free, but Passport sales will help keep it sustainable. I’m still finalizing our restaurant partners—stay tuned for an update soon. Thanks so much for your support!

Gather: Our First In-Person Event?

When we launched last month, it was all about nurturing real connections in our community. Since then, this little newsletter has grown quickly, and it feels like the right time to finally bring folks together in person. Would you join a casual happy hour at a local brewery? The hope is for readers to meet, share stories, and connect. We’re also toying with ideas like inviting local food vendors!

CREATIVE SPOTLIGHT

Creativity is everywhere in the Twin Cities, and this new section hopes to highlight the local artists and makers behind it. From time to time, someone new will be featured—bringing fresh ideas to life through art, music, or other creative projects. Their stories might just spark some inspiration of your own.

Today, we’re excited to shine a light on Maria Ahrens.

Maria Ahrens is a self-taught watercolor artist based in Northeast Minneapolis. She rediscovered fine art while initially pursuing a career in the fashion industry, but what began as a just-for-fun creative outlet slowly evolved into its own career trajectory. She started out painting fun things like vintage typewriters and evening gowns, but her body of work has expanded into something that resonates more deeply with who she is as a woman and how she experiences the world through that lens.

Maria’s experience in fashion is certainly present in her work, and she also draws inspiration from people, architecture, nature, and her travels. She would describe her painting style as realism with a dash of whimsy. Her watercolor artwork is remarkably detailed, and she often experiments with contrast and color to direct the eye and influence perception.

This is one of Maria’s favorite watercolor prints. Check it out!

This unique approach will be on full display at Art-a-Whirl next month, where Maria is excited to showcase her latest pieces. You can find her at the A-Mill Artists Lofts from May 16–18, sharing her creative process and connecting with art lovers in person.

To see more of Maria’s work and stay updated on her artistic journey, visit her website or follow her on Instagram at @mariaahrensart.
